Four drown during immersions,three bodies recovered: Ganesh Immersion

Four persons drowned in separate incidents in Pune district during the annual Ganesh idol immersions on Thursday and Friday. The bodies of three of them have been found while the search for the fourth was on till late on Friday.

In Khadki Cantonment area, a 20-year-old youth, a conservancy staff member at the house of a military officer in Khadki, drowned when he had come to a Ghat on Mula river near Ammunition Factory on Thursday evening to see the visarajan procession. Fire Brigade officials have identified the deceased as Swapnil Mandare, who according to eyewitnesses, fell into the river after he slipped around 6.30 pm.

His body was taken out of water in the morning on Friday around 10.30 am. In another incident near Dhayari Bridge, a 22-year-old youth who had entered the waters to immerse the idol drowned around 6 pm.

In Chakan, a 28-year-old man working with a private company in the same area and who had come to a Ghat in Chakan for Ganesh Visarjan with his brother drowned while immersing the idol.

In the fourth incident early Friday, a 52-year-old man who was pulling out of water a raft used for immersing an idol drowned while trying to rescue the person accompanying him. The incident took place around 1.30 am at Pimple Saudagar. Fire brigade personnel have identified the deceased as Shankar Lokhande (52).
