Salman Khan pledges over Rs 1 lakh to each of India's Rio athletes
India is experiencing a forgetful campaign at the ongoing Rio Olympics despite of sending its largestever contingent to the Olympics. The athletes have failed to win a single medal at the Rio Games, currently in its 12th day. Star archers and shooters have disappointed while the men's and women's hockey teams were handed defeats. Tennis stars Sania Mirza, Leander Paes and Rohan Bopanna too failed to provide joy to the nation. The only bright spot in India's campaign have been gymnast Dipa Karmakar, shooter Abhinav Bindra and shuttlers PV Sindhu and Kidambi Srikanth.
Dipa became the first ever Indian to qualify for the gymnastic finals, narrowly missing out on a bronze medal by finishing fourth, while Bindra too had to settle for a fourth-place finish.
Sindhu has reached the semifinals of the women's singles event, while Srikanth lost out to two-time Olympic champion Lin Dan in the quarters of the men's singles.
The dismal campaign has come under some criticism, notably from novelist and author Shobhaa De, who tweeted: "Goal of Team India at the Olympics: Rio jao. Selfies lo. Khaali haat wapas aao. What a waste of money and opportunity," sparked further outrage.
De's tweet sparked outrage on social media with sportspersons, politicians and actors defending the athletes. Meanwhile, at a time when the national mood is at an alltime low, Bollywood superstar Salman Khan has announced that he will present each Indianathlete with a cheque of Rs1,01,000.
